Autobiography
My first experience with art was through my Grandpa, Arthur R. Hostetler, he
who was a freelance writer and Graphic Designer. As a young child I did exhibits and an
art contest in Jr. High and High School. I went on to earn my GED in 1995. In 1996, I
enrolled into the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, after two years of studying art, I graduated
with an Associate’ degree in Visual Communications. After graduation in December of
1998 I enlisted in the Army, I served three years of active duty.
While serving I did several art related projects for my chain of command. In 2002
I transferred to the Ohio National Guard. In 2003, I applied to and was accepted into the
Masters of Fine Arts Program at Cleveland Institute of Art. I won the Portfolio Ideal
Award for incoming students who had extraordinary Portfolio’s, at the end of my first
semester, I was deployed to Iraq. While there, I kept up with art by sketching and draw
every chance I got, I won an art contest that was put on by our Base beating out 15 other
artist in that competition. Returning after deployment in March of 2005, I transferred to
and resumed my studies at Youngstown State University. I graduated in May of 2008
with a Bachelor’s of Fine Art in Studio Art, with Minors in Art History, Graphic Design and
Contemporary Painting. In September of 2008, I started working on my Masters of Fine
Art in Illustration through the Academy of Art University masters program. As I started
my program I was diagnosed as a diabetic, this did have an effect on my drawing, in
terms of my sight. My future plans after graduation is to work professionally as a
freelance contemporary artist, I will also continue to pursue my dream as of earning my
PHD of Fine Art.

Abstract
Art, drawing and I go way back, throughout my youth I grew and understanding
of what art is from my many mentors, instructors, teachers, and artist that have
influenced my life. There has been a field of illustration that has been in and out of my
life since beginning of my interest in art which is Poster art. In 1796 Lithography was
invented by Alois Senenfelder and mass media was born, also lead to the invention of
chromomlithogaphy, with the new marvel of mass printing. Paris become by the way of
posters was coined “art galleries in the streets” from this lead to a very major exhibition
of poster art.
There will be a series of four groups of four illustrations, which will deal with the
following concepts: Post‐traumatic stress disorder, American Pride, Military Honor, and
Fantasy art. Final review will consist of sketch books and thumbnails, along with 16
illustrations in either in Oil or Mixed media. My goal of this thesis project is to have a
professional portfolio that will allow me to be a freelance illustrator for companies like
7.62 Design or Wizards of the Coast, and consistent professional portfolio that shows my
experience and knowledge learned from the Academy of Art University.

Thesis Proposal
Art, drawing and me go way back, before I even new, what art, is was or even could be, from
my many instructors, teacher, and artist that have influence my life. There a field of illustration that
been in and out of my life since the beginning that is Poster Art. Max Gallo a French historian states
that posters have been in public places for the last 200 hundred years, for either events or political
viewpoints and for product or a service.
Poster comes in many sizes from placards to movie posters of today. In 1796 lithography was
invented by Alois Senenfelder and mass media was born, also lead to the invention of
chromomlithogaphy, with the new marvel of mass printing. Paris become by the way of posters was
coined “art galleries in the streets” from this lead to a very major exhibition of poster art in 1884.
By the 1890 posters was so main stream that the commercial uses are still being felt today.
“Maitres de I’Affiche” was created by artist Jules Cheret (Masters of the poster) series, even though it
was huge commercial success it consider a very important historical publication. The first American
poster of merit would be the “Uncle Sam wants you” poster during the first and second world wars
for recruitment. In 1927 the movies of early Hollywood discovered that poster had great applications
for their movies, as an advertising and American love collecting them. Example Fritz Lang’s poster
from the movie “Metropolis” Sold for US$690,000 in 2005.
There will be a series of four groups of four illustrations, which will deal with the following
concepts: Post‐traumatic stress disorder, American Pride, Military Honor, and Fantasy art. Final
review will consist of sketch books and thumbnails, along with 15 illustrations in either in Oil or Mixed
media. The 15 illustrations will be broke down in the following: Four poster illustrations advertising
Post‐traumatic stress disorder, four poster illustrations on American Pride, four poster illustrations
for Military Honor and the remaining three poster illustration will be of Fantasy art. My goal of this
thesis project is to have a professional portfolio that will allow me to be a freelance illustrator for

companies like 7.62 Design or Wizards of the Coast, and consistent professional portfolio that shows
my experience and knowledge learned from the Academy of Art University.
